Lead Western Maine
...helping people shape the future of western Maine.

Western Mountains Alliance helps build capacity and leadership through:

Western Maine Legislative Caucus - WMA works with partners in Franklin County to host three annual legislative caucuses focused on issues impacting the region.  The caucuses typically use an expert panel format and are attended by 75 - 100 people, primarily from Franklin County, and including area legislators.

Lead Western Maine Program - The Maine Community Foundation in partnership with the Western Mountains Alliance created lead Western Maine in 2002.  The program brings together groups working on specific community projects to learn about leadership, strategic planning, mission development and funding strategies that will enable them to move their work forward.

Rural Broadband Coalition - Facilitated by Jim Batey, Somerset Economic Development Corporation. The coalition includes representatives from Kennebec Valley Council of Governments, Maine Rural Partners, Greater Franklin Development Corporation, Piscataquis County Ecomonic Development Council, Washington County Economic Development Corporation. The group was formed in July 2007 and is working to expand broadband coverage in rural communities. For more information email tswain@westernmountainsalliance.org.

Building Capacity...
"It is the nature of our work. It is what we do." University of Maine at Farmington President and former WMA chair Theo Kalikow wrote in the Winter 2000 issue of the Advocate. "Whether it is spotting a need, bringing people together who can address the issues, provide advice and counsel, do a project or help start the right ongoing group. We are doers, linkers, incubators, and facilitators, but above all we celebrate and advocate for the western mountains region of Maine."
