Promoting Conservation and Planning
...helping people shape the future of western Maine.

Western Mountains Alliance works with a vast network of individuals and organizations to support sustainable, multiple uses of our region's natural resources

Woods and Waters Group of the Maine Mountain Heritage Network - The Woods and Waters Group of the Maine Mountain Heritage Network was formed to support sustainable multiple land use in western Maine and provides strategic planning and coordination support to groups undertaking large landscape resource studies in the Rangeley, High Peaks, Upper Kennebec and Hundred-Mile Wilderness areas. To date the group has provided input to a resource mapping project in the Mahoosuc Region and is developing similar projects in Franklin and Somerset Counties with the intent of building consensus around local priorities for land use in the region and informing the work of conservationists, developers, and planners.

Renewable Energy
- Gasoline prices are expected to drop very slightly in 2007 as compared with 2006 (according to the Energy Information Administration), heating oil and electricity prices, however, are expected to continue increasing in New England.  Increasing fuel costs impact both homeowners and business owners in western Maine.  Developing renewable energy resources in the region present an opportunity for western Maine to offset increasing energy costs and develop new businesses.  Western Maine has farm products and byproducts suitable for renewable energy, wind, geothermal, biomass and biofuels.  For these reasons and others, encouraging the energy efficiency and the development of renewable energy sources make sense for the region.
